I learned this lesson firsthand.

Years ago, a recruiter reached out to me about a sales position at a company I had little interest in. They called me once, then again, and then a third time. Each time, I politely declined. The recruiter had given me the bare minimum of information—just a few details about the role, nothing that sparked excitement. I had convinced myself it wasn’t worth my time.

But on that third call, something in me shifted. I decided to give them an hour of my day for an in-person meeting. And that one decision changed everything.

‍

The moment I stepped into their office, I realized how much the recruiter had left out. The company culture, the leadership team, the growth opportunities—none of it had been fully captured in those initial conversations.

‍

What I had assumed would be a wasted meeting turned into an eye-opening discussion. Not only did I walk away with a deeper understanding of the company, but I also walked away with a job offer. And that job ended up being one of the most pivotal career moves I’ve ever made.

Looking back, I wonder what would have happened if I had stuck to my initial "no." Would I have found a similar opportunity elsewhere? Would I have taken a different, less fulfilling path? The truth is, we never know which conversations will lead to life-changing outcomes until we have them.

So, the next time an opportunity comes your way—especially one that doesn't seem like the perfect fit at first—consider saying yes to the meeting.
